Fire tears through Tenderloin apartment building

  • December 12, 2025

A six-story residential building caught fire in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district early Friday, prompting multiple rescues and displacing an unknown number of residents, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to Golden Gate Avenue between Taylor and Jones streets shortly after 3:15 a.m., and arrived to find flames coming from the top floor, according to a San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson.

The blaze escalated quickly, prompting the fire department to deploy more resources. By 4:18 a.m., flames had spread across the upper floors. Video (opens in new tab) on social media showed the flames bursting through the structure.

Crews conducted multiple rescues during the initial response while other residents fled to safety on their own, fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was unknown.

Paramedics rescued and treated a cat at the scene. The animal was awaiting transfer to Animal Control.

Displaced residents were directed to a temporary shelter set up on a Muni bus at the corner of Golden Gate Avenue and Jones Street.

Fire officials did not immediately provide an estimate of how many residents were displaced.
