LONG BEACH – A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle Thursday in Long Beach.
The woman was struck about 6:20 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of East Anaheim Street and Rose Avenue.
Long Beach Police Department officers dispatched to the location found the woman in the roadway and attempted to give her lifesaving aid. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and rushed her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
According to preliminary findings, a 2022 Honda Accord was traveling west on East Anaheim Street when it struck the woman as she was attempting to cross the street.
As of January 1, 2023, jaywalking is no longer a criminal offense in California, unless it creates a hazard. The Freedom to Walk Act, or AB 2147, allows pedestrians to cross the street outside of crosswalks and intersections if it is safe to do so.
“Speed, impaired and distracted driving do not appear to be contributing factors into this collision,” according to police department news release. “The driver remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.”
The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of her next of kin.
Anyone who may have witnessed the accident was urged to call Detective Edwin Parades of the LBPD Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7110. Anonymous tips can be submitted through LA Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222- TIPS (8477) or online at LACrimeStoppers.org.
