LAKEWOOD — Senior forward Jah’asharee Moore scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Long Beach Jordan girls basketball team to a 48-40 road win over Lakewood in a Moore League season opener Friday night.

Moore, who scored 10 points in the first quarter, and anchor’s Jordan’s strong defensive effort, also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

“Honestly, I am a dog,” Moore said. “My point when I step on that court is to be a dog, be aggressive. Coach wants me to be aggressive and that’s my identity. I know if I’m aggressive, then my team will pick up after me.”

Jordan improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the Moore League. The victory was fifth-year coach Wesley Rosenbaum’s first ever against Lakewood.

“I’m just really proud of the girls,” Rosenbaum said. “It feels great to pick up a big win.”

Lakewood dropped to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the Moore League.

Senior center Kasey-Rian Henson led the Lancers with 13 points and a game-high 23 rebounds. Sophomore guard Mahlia Simmons added 10 points and six rebounds.

Lakewood, who is playing this season with four new starters, played tough defense early.

However, so did Jordan, but with the wrinkle of successful half-court traps, which forced several turnovers.

“We feel like defense wins games,” Moore continued.

The Panthers jumped out to an 11-3 lead midway through the first quarter courtesy of a 3-pointer by junior guard Harmony Isaac, who finished with six points. Moore’s 3-pointer and subsequent jumper made it 16-3.

Moore and Isaac scored the team’s first 16 points.

“When the game starts, I have to show them who I am,” Moore explained.

Jordan led 17-6 at the end of the first.

“From my perspective, the difference in the game was we started the game off very chaotic and not under control,” Lakewood coach Eric Oswell said. “We didn’t take control of the ball in the first quarter and we ended up digging ourselves a hole we couldn’t dig ourselves back out.”

The Lancers played without their leading scorer, freshman guard Aniyah Lindsey, who is averaging 17 points.

“I don’t want to make excuses but we probably handle the pressure earlier in the game if (Lindsey) is there,” Oswell continued. “If she’s on the court, she’s my third guard and that’s who we’re used to breaking the press with.”

Lakewood used a 10-4 run to cut it to 21-16 midway through the second quarter.

However, Jordan closed the first half on a 9-2 run and led 30-18 at halftime. Moore had 12 points in the first half.

“She’s just the ultimate competitor,” Rosenbaum said. “The way she plays on the court is the example of how I want everybody to play.”

Moore’s runner was followed by a layup, making it 34-18 early in the third. The Panthers extended their advantage to 41-26 by the end of the third.

Henson’s three-point play cut it 41-31 with 6:35 to go.

Lakewood switched to a full-court press, which slowed Jordan’s offense.

However, senior guard Janiah Lorn broke down the Lancers’ half court defense with a nice inside pass to freshman forward Mila Hunt for a layup. The Panthers led 47-36.

Lancers sophomore forward Laylah Patterson’s layup cut it to 47-38.

Lorn made 1 of 2 free throws to go up 48-38.

Henson’s putback cut it to 48-40 with less than a minute to go but the Panthers held on to secure the victory.

Lakewood will play a nonleague game at Paramount on Monday.

Jordan will play in the championship game of the Mark Keppel tournament on Saturday. The Panthers’ next Moore League game will be at Millikan on Tuesday.
