The Spirit of Liberty Foundation and it’s iconic America’s Freedom Bell was the centerpiece of a float in the San Diego Veterans Day Parade.

As background, America’s Freedom Bell has historically been at the National Veterans Day Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and had the honor of being the only item allowed other than wreaths and flowers, according to a news release.

This year, since the bell is displayed at the San Diego Air and Space Museum, it didn’t travel to Arlington. Instead, they had been asked to feature the bell on a float in the parade. The San Diego Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution were aboard the float in their colorful, authentic Revolutionary War attire, the news release stated.

General Eric M. Smith, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, prepared a special Veterans Day statement for the Spirit of Liberty Foundation. An excerpt of his letter in the news release said: “This year, we celebrate a milestone unlike any other: 250 years of honor, courage, and commitment. Since 1775, Marines have answered the call, fighting our Nation’s battles with grit, discipline, and an unyielding devotion to duty. From the shores of Tripoli to the jungles of the Pacific, from the deserts of the Middle East to today’s contested littorals, the Marine Corps has remained America’s force-in-readiness — always forward-deployed, first to fight, and always ready.”
