A government office in Tijuana, Mexico, was attacked Wednesday night by a drone dropping homemade explosives, Baja California’s top prosecutor confirmed.
The explosion happened at the anti-kidnapping unit facilities of the Baja California Attorney General’s office in Playas de Tijuana around 7 p.m. It prompted the U.S. consulate there to issue a security alert for American citizens.
Baja California Prosecutor María Elena Andrade said the explosives were homemade, using plastic bottles with nails and metal fragments inside to create an explosion.
“These bottles are activated by the drone, carried from a very long distance, which can be kilometers, and they activate a type of gunpowder so that the device expands the metals inside,” she said in Spanish. “In other words, it is not a Molotov cocktail, nor is it activated by a fire mechanism, but rather by the damage that can be caused by the metals or fragments inside.”
The Baja California Attorney General’s office said traces of explosive devices were found in their investigation. Part of the building, four private vehicles and two official vehicles were damaged.
No injuries were reported, officials said.
