FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The space between the pool and the theater at Roosevelt High will soon be under construction.

Principal Michael Allen says an additional gym is being added to support physical education and athletics for the more than 2,000 students on campus.

“So if it’s extremely hot or if it’s raining, then we need our students to be able to have access to indoor spaces. This will provide an additional space for that,” Allen said.

The more than 13,000-square-foot space will make it easier for sports teams to practice simultaneously.

Architect Jonathan McMurtry says the building will primarily have the gym, but also several added features.

“It will have a big lobby and snack bar that serves the outside. In addition to that, it will have offices, two classrooms that serve as team rooms on weekends and miscellaneous site improvements,” McMurtry said.

The gym’s design won’t replicate the school’s current look, but McMurtry says it will have specific features that help tie it into the campus.

“Here’s the references to the more historical elements of the campus — the tripartite with the base, the middle and the top,” McMurtry explained.

Principal Allen says he’s looking forward to having more space for students on campus.

“It’s just extremely exciting because we utilize every inch of our campus, and so having a new gym in this space is going to open up many opportunities for students,” Allen said.

Construction started during Thanksgiving break.

The gym is expected to be completed by the Spring of 2027.
