DOWNTOWN FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Construction has taken over the Fulton District in downtown Fresno as a new parking structure and housing is on the way.
The city broke ground on the parking garage on Broadway and Tuolumne on Monday, set to be named after the former Carnegie Library, which was at that location for over a century.
This is a rendering from the city of that 8-story parking garage set to hold over 600 cars.
“A parking structure that will support nearby businesses and a future housing development with more than 450 units of both market-rate and affordable housing,” says Mayor Jerry Dyer.
Just down the street from the garage, crews were seen working on the site of that future housing development.
“It’s about families strolling to dinner or attending a concert, artists showcasing their work, small businesses thriving and residents feeling proud about the place they call home,” Mayor Dyer says.
The city says the developments are made possible through a $44.3 million grant and $250 million in state funding.
“Those are funds the city does not have to raise water or sewer rates for, general taxes to be able to invest in its own downtown,” says Fresno City Councilmember Miguel Arias.
Those capital investments have already been used to improve the necessary infrastructure in the area.
“The replacement of water and sewer mains will be completed shortly in both Chinatown and South Fulton,” Arias says
Mayor Jerry Dyer says that work will continue on North Fulton at the start of the new year.
The parking structure is expected to be done next December.
