Cal State Bakersfield’s assistant basketball coach and alumnus, Kevin Mays, was arrested for allegedly trafficking a woman across three states. The victim was located in Sacramento, where the Bakersfield Police Department was able to contact her with the help of the Sacramento Police Department’s Human Trafficking Unit. 

The BPD launched an investigation after receiving an anonymous tip on Aug. 3, 2025, saying that a woman was being trafficked across California, Oregon and Washington. 

The victim was found in a hotel room booked under Mays name and also was in possession of a rental car under his name. According to the police, the victim identified Mays as her trafficker.

Mays was served with a search warrant by detectives and according to BPD, a loaded gun and narcotics were found in the car, along with large amounts of marijuana and cocaine in his apartment. Four guns were also found in the apartment as well as signs of drug sales. 

On Sept. 4 he was booked into the Kern County Jail on charges of human trafficking, pimping and pandering, weapon violations, and drug offenses. 

Following this investigation and arrest Mays is currently on leave.
