The city of Sacramento is celebrating the completion and reopening of the Del Rio Trail Bridge, marking the final piece of the Del Rio Trail project.The newly rebuilt bridge now allows people to walk or bike from south Sacramento to downtown on one continuous, car-free trail. City officials said the connection is a major milestone for active transportation and connectivity in the Capitol City.Crews were seen putting the finishing touches on the bridge ahead of Tuesday morning’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. The bridge, located near the Sacramento Zoo, provides a safe crossing over Interstate 5 and completes a long-awaited portion of the trail.The original bridge was closed when the Del Rio Trail opened last year in May after the city determined it did not meet safety standards. Officials said the structure had to be redesigned and rebuilt to ensure public safety.Construction began over the summer and took approximately five months to complete. The safety concerns that delayed the opening are now resolved.With the bridge back open, bikers and walkers are once again able to use the full Del Rio Trail, offering a new option for commuters, families, and recreational users to leave their cars behind.A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The mayor and other city officials are expected to attend.
