PRESS-TELEGRAM GIRLS BASKETBALL TOP 10

1. St. Joseph (5-1): The Jesters. who were off last week, will carry a four-game win streak into their Nike Tournament of Champions opener Thursday against Highland of Arizona.

2. St. Anthony (7-1): The Saints, who are on a seven-game win streak, rise to No. 2 in the rankings after an 85-12 victory against Mayfair on Dec. 9. St. Anthony will begin the Nike Tournament of Champions against Hamilton of Arizona on Thursday. The Saints’ only loss was to No. 3-ranked Lynwood 71-56 in their season opener without senior starting guard Laila Hughes.

3. Lynwood (5-4): The Knights drop to No. 3 in the rankings after going 2-1 last week. Lynwood beat Crescenta Valley 52-43 and Mark Keppel 68-38 but lost to Ontario Christian 89-44 on Saturday, Dec. 13.

4. Downey (8-3): The Vikings are on a three-game win streak with victories over Alta Loma, South Hills and Upland. They will play nonleague games at Whittier and La Serna on Friday and Saturday, respectively.  Sophomore guard Natalie Gomez is averaging a double-double with 19.2 points and 12.1 rebounds.

5. Long Beach Poly (1-8): The Jackrabbits won their Moore League opener against Millikan 58-36 on Friday, Dec. 12. Freshman guard Eliana Mao scored 20 points. Poly, the defending league champions, will host No. 10-ranked Lakewood on Thursday.

6. Dominguez (10-1): The Dons are on a seven-game win streak and rise to No. 6 in the rankings. They have had blowout victories over Rancho Dominguez, La Puente, Marquez, Elizabeth and LA Jordan.

7. Los Alamitos (6-3): The Griffins drop to No. 7 after going 2-2 last week. They had bookend victories over Heritage Christian and Cypress. Los Alamitos lost to Mira Costa and Esperanza. They will be off for two weeks until they play Yorba Linda on Dec. 29.

8. Paramount (6-3): The Pirates drop to No. 8 in the rankings after going 3-2 in their last five games, including a nonleague victory over No. 10-ranked Lakewood.

9. Long Beach Jordan (6-4): The Panthers rise to No. 9 after going 3-1 last week with victories over Savanna, Warren and No. 10-ranked Lakewood. Jordan’s victory over Lakewood was the program’s first under fifth-year coach Wesley Rosenbaum. Senior forward Jah’asharee Moore was named Press-Telegram Girls Athlete of the Week after scoring a game-high 20 points against the Lancers on Friday, Dec. 12.

10. Lakewood (4-7): The Lancers are on a four-game losing streak. They play key Moore League games against Cabrillo and No. 5-ranked Long Beach Poly this week. Senior center Kasey-Rian Henson has been rebounding well. Lakewood’s leading scorer, freshman guard Aniyah Lindsey, has been sidelined during the recent stretch due to injury. Her return is necessary for a chance at the Moore League title.
