Hours after a San Diego police SWAT team responded to a barricaded suspect in an apartment near the Gaslamp District, officers had him in custody, but a K-9 was injured in the process.

Multiple police vehicles converged on the 200 block of J Street shortly after noon on Tuesday.

“The suspect is wanted in connection with an assault with a deadly weapon call and may be armed,” police said in a post on X. “Please avoid the area as officers work to resolve the incident.”

There were reports from the scene in the Gaslamp that police used tear gas in an attempt to force the suspect out.

A witness said a woman living in the apartment had been assaulted by a man with baseball bat. After seeing him Tuesday, she called the police. He did not come out when ordered and police were believed to have him barricaded in a bathroom.

Police have yet to offer details about the condition of the canine or how the standoff ended.
