{"id":100032,"date":"2025-12-18T19:26:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T19:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/100032\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T19:26:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T19:26:08","slug":"eerie-bloom-off-of-northern-california-the-press-democrat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/100032\/","title":{"rendered":"Eerie bloom off of Northern California \u2013 The Press Democrat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eerie green swirls were seen off the coast of Northern California recently in <a href=\"https:\/\/modis.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\/gallery\/individual.php?db_date=2025-12-15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA satellite photos<\/a> as a result of a large colony of phytoplankton.<\/p>\n<p>These plant-like organisms that live in the Pacific Ocean can reproduce and explode into massive blooms easily seen from space. As impressive as the hue may seem, however, the biotoxins produced by the algae is harmful to marine life and fisheries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA record breaking algal bloom continues to expand across the North Pacific reaching as far north as the Aleutian Islands and as far south as southern California,\u201d according to an article published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). \u201cAmidst well-above average sea surface temperatures across the North Pacific and along the western coastline of North America, a toxic algal bloom has developed with far reaching consequences for sea life as well as regional and local economies,\u201d it continued.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"This image, taken in the month of July, shows high concentrations of surface chlorophyll along coastal areas up and down the West Coast as well as across a wide swath of the Gulf of Alaska. (NOAA Climate.gov)<\/p>\n<p>The biotoxins have led to some Dungeness crab production closures in Washington and some sardine and anchovy fisheries closures in California. Some of these closures and health warnings were lifted on December 12, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>The current satellite image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA\u2019s Aqua satellite on December 11.
