{"id":100288,"date":"2025-12-18T22:59:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T22:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/100288\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T22:59:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T22:59:11","slug":"san-francisco-giants-buy-the-legendary-curran-theatre-venue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/100288\/","title":{"rendered":"San Francisco Giants buy the legendary Curran Theatre venue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The San Francisco Giants have just made an important acquisition.<\/p>\n<p>But, no, it\u2019s not a power-hitting second baseman so the team can better compete with the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s actually the Curran Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>The Giants announced Thursday they have acquired the famed theater \u2014 which is one of the marquee spots for performing arts in all of the Bay Area \u2014 from the Curran\u2019s previous owner Carole Shorenstein Hays \u201cin a private transaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition will not affect the future of the theater, which is located on 445 Geary St., in the heart of the city\u2019s theater district, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe acquisition marks a significant moment in the city\u2019s cultural life, uniting a storied performing arts venue with a civic institution deeply committed to San Francisco\u2019s long-term vitality through sports and entertainment,\u201d according to a news release. \u201cThe Shorenstein family\u2019s relationship with the San Francisco Giants reflects shared values of stewardship and long-term investment in San Francisco.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Curran will continue to be operated by BroadwaySF, San Francisco\u2019s biggest theater presenter, which also presents shows at the Orpheum and Golden Gate theaters, both located on Market Street. All current programming will continue as scheduled.<\/p>\n<p>Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>The move further paves the way for the Giants \u2014 who have long welcomed major concerts into its picturesque ballpark \u2014 to be involved with more kinds of entertainment offerings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcquiring the Curran expands our commitment to San Francisco and reinforces our core belief that sports, arts and culture are essential to San Francisco\u2019s identity, economy and resurgence,\u201d says Larry Baer, president and CEO of the Giants. \u201cWe intend to honor the Curran\u2019s storied past steeped in Broadway shows and musicals and continue to build and expand the offerings of live performances reflective of our city\u2019s culture, inclusive of music, comedy and family entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carole Shorenstein Hays says the deal helps secure a good future for the theater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Curran is where I first fell in love with the theater as a young girl, and its curation has been the center of my professional life since I acquired it in 2010,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was essential to me that its next stewards would ensure it remains a vibrant home for artists and audiences alike. I am so pleased that the Giants have stepped up to the plate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie also applauded the Giants\u2019 move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a landmark moment for San Francisco, representing an unprecedented commitment by the Giants to the cultural life of our city,\u201d he says. \u201cIt sends a powerful signal of confidence in downtown and Union Square and the essential role the arts and entertainment play in driving our city forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since opening in 1922, the Curran has hosted several landmark productions. Among the most notable bookings include August Wilson\u2019s \u201cFences\u201d (which played the Curran prior to winning the Tony Award for best play as well as the Pulitzer Prize); the world premiere engagement of \u201cWicked.\u201d; and the incredible run of \u201cThe Phantom of the Opera\u201d that lasted from 1993 to 1999.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The San Francisco Giants have just made an important acquisition.
