Following a historic football season\u00a0in which\u00a0Trinity\u00a0Classical Academy\u2019s\u00a0Hudson Sweitzer led the Knights to\u00a0their\u00a0first 11-man playoff win in November, the senior\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0letting the wear and tear of the football\u00a0year\u00a0ruin his start to the wrestling season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
After placing third in the\u00a0Downey 32-way tournament in early December, Sweitzer followed up the performance by earning the top step of the podium\u00a0in the Coyote Classic in Bakersfield on Dec. 13.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe tournament was so good, I got a lot of time to work on new moves and really get back into my wrestling mindset,\u201d he said in an interview with The Signal. \u201cThe Coyote Classic was the first varsity tournament I had ever\u00a0participated\u00a0in in my\u00a0freshman\u00a0year. It taught me so much that I still carry on to this day.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0nice to return to that same tournament and dominate for my last year of high\u00a0school wrestling.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the Coyote Classic, Sweitzer competed in the 215-pound bracket and scored back-to-back takedowns in the first and second round\u00a0against Gavin Colbert of West High School and Ezekiel Rocha of Liberty High School\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the quarterfinals, Sweitzer faced off against Silas Anderson of Tehachapi\u00a0High School and won 5-0 as he recorded a takedown and\u00a0near fall.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sweitzer advanced to the semifinals and defeated Mykell Kelly of Del Oro High School with a takedown and\u00a0clinched\u00a0his spot in the finals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAll five matches were good for me. The\u00a0only challenging ones for me were my last two, but they were all\u00a0a great way\u00a0for me to get back into my groove,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was\u00a0a great\u00a0tournament to remind me what\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been missing for a year.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sweitzer\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0seem\u00a0to\u00a0have\u00a0missed a beat.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the finals, Sweitzer\u00a0landed a takedown on Randy Lenoir of East High School and earned first place in the bracket along with\u00a0recording five pins in\u00a0all\u00a0five matches\u00a0he\u00a0participated\u00a0in,\u00a0with two of them coming under 19 seconds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
With the win, Sweitzer takes the\u00a0first-place medal and gives Trinity Classical Academy a wrestling champion, a feat that\u00a0makes him feel\u00a0honored\u00a0to\u00a0represent\u00a0his school.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0had so much support throughout the school and to give them progress and a champion means so much,\u201d he said. \u201cTo be able to carry\u00a0Trinity\u2019s\u00a0name to the top in a sport I love is such a great honor, and to do it in a dominating fashion is even better.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
