Rash of shootings reflecta lack of standards<\/p>\n

Re: \u201cGunfire wounds troops in DC<\/a>\u201d (Page A1, Nov. 27) and \u201cLegendary coach shot at Laney College<\/a>\u201d (Page A1, Nov. 14).<\/p>\n

The last 30 years have seen heinous mass shootings of innocents become \u201cho-hum\u201d events of everyday life \u2014 from Columbine<\/a> (1999) to Sandy Hook<\/a> (2012) schools; to just-engaged 20-year-old-Israelis<\/a> walking (2025) in Washington, D.C.; to Laney college football coach John Beam (November 2025).<\/p>\n

Mental health issues do occur; 100 years ago, such shootings didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Grievances exist, but why think cold-blooded murder solves anything? What happened to morals and ethics \u2014 originating from family teachings, logic or biblical dicta \u2014 required for every society\u2019s survival? We cannot forever blame \u201cothers.\u201d Resume teaching personal responsibility.<\/p>\n

There is no longer any \u201cright\u201d or \u201cwrong.\u201d Anything goes. You don\u2019t like somebody\u2019s hat, politics or religion? Shoot them.<\/p>\n

Are you, Mr. and Ms. America, proud of the lack of behavioral standards we now have? Is anarchy \u2014 where \u201canything goes\u201d \u2014 something we seek for our children?<\/p>\n
