{"id":10519,"date":"2025-10-17T23:38:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T23:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/10519\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T23:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T23:38:08","slug":"california-ag-sues-plastic-bag-makers-over-alleged-false-recycling-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/10519\/","title":{"rendered":"California AG sues plastic bag makers over alleged false recycling claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">California Attorney General Rob Bonta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/plastic-bag-manufacturers-investigation-concludes-attorney-general-bonta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:announced a lawsuit Friday against three plastic bag manufacturers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">announced a lawsuit Friday against three plastic bag manufacturers<\/a> for allegedly claiming their bags are recyclable when, in fact, they are not, <a href=\"https:\/\/opc.ca.gov\/2014\/10\/plastic-bag-ban-signed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:thereby violating a state law.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">thereby violating a state law.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The companies named in the suit, Novolex Holdings LLC, Inteplast Group Corp., and Mettler Packaging LLC, were unable to produce evidence that the plastic bags they sold in California were recyclable, according to the attorney general\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The lawsuit asks the court to enforce state consumer protection laws and SB 270, the state\u2019s single-use plastic bag ban, and force the companies to pay back the profits made from their bag sales, plus additional penalties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Similarly, Bonta also announced a settlement with four other plastic bag producers \u2014 Revolution, Metro Poly, PreZero, and API \u2014 who agreed to resolve allegations that they violated the same laws. \u00a0As part of the settlement, the companies agreed to halt plastic bag sales in California and collectively pay more than $1.75 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Through our investigation, we are bringing to light how powerful companies have broken the law and prioritized profits over our environment,\u201d Bonta said in a statement. \u201cThe consequences of these violations are severe: Billions of plastic carryout bags end up in landfills, incinerators, and the\u00a0environment instead of being recycled as the bags proclaim.
