The city stated that the weir enables Bakersfield&#8217;s water department to control floodwater and divert Kern River water for various purposes.<\/p>\n<p>The weir was damaged by high flows in 2019 and again in 2023, making it non-operational. <a href=\"https:\/\/bakersfieldnow.com\/news\/local\/city-of-bakersfield-begins-replacement-of-damaged-kern-river-canal-backup-weir-coffee-road-brige-water-flood-flow-demolitoion-residents-california\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/bakersfieldnow.com\/news\/local\/city-of-bakersfield-begins-replacement-of-damaged-kern-river-canal-backup-weir-coffee-road-brige-water-flood-flow-demolitoion-residents-california\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Construction began in February 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The reconstructed weir will enhance the city&#8217;s ability to manage water flows more efficiently, which will reduce flooding risk, protecting property.<\/p>\n<p>It also includes a new multi-use path for bicyclists to cross the Kern River.
