{"id":10796,"date":"2025-10-18T02:42:21","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T02:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/10796\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T02:42:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T02:42:21","slug":"vta-moves-forward-with-san-jose-tunnel-design-for-bart-extension-nbc-bay-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/10796\/","title":{"rendered":"VTA moves forward with San Jose tunnel design for BART extension \u2013 NBC Bay Area"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Valley Transportation Authority&#8217;s board made it official Friday by voting to press forward with the plan to dig a single large tunnel as it extends Bay Area Rapid Transit to downtown San Jose.<\/p>\n<p>The single-tunnel project has the advantage of being less disruptive to local businesses since the boring will be nearly 100 feet below ground.<\/p>\n<p>But critics said it will end up costing more in the end and worry about how difficult it will be to evacuate riders during an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>The NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit has been reporting on questions surrounding the cost and safety of the design amid a $1 billion federal funding shortfall.
