A person was fatally shot on a Los Angeles Metro bus Wednesday afternoon in South L.A.<\/p>\n
According to Metro, a group of \u201cyoung men\u201d got into an altercation on the street.<\/p>\n
That altercation then continued on a bus on Route 206, where \u201ca member of the group shot and fatally injured another member of the group,\u201d the transportation agency said to LAist.<\/p>\n
The suspects fled before police arrived, according to Metro.<\/p>\n

Safety on Metro<\/p>\n
Since summer 2024, the transportation agency has been testing scanners that can detect concealed weapons at the entrances to rail stations throughout L.A. County and is in the early stages of possibly adopting the same approach for its buses.<\/p>\n
In the latest 12-month-long phase of the pilot, which began in late April, Metro has been testing the technology at two rail stations at a time in two-month increments.<\/p>\n
In a September report to its board, Metro staff said the \u201cmost frequently encountered\u201d items during screenings have been \u201cbladed objects.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn most cases, these were legitimate work-related tools that patrons were lawfully transporting,\u201d staff said, adding that only one firearm had been detected as of the report.<\/p>\n

In the same September update to its board, Metro staff said the transportation agency remains in \u201cactive discussions\u201d with a vendor for its bus-centered program.<\/p>\n
Over the summer, the vendor demoed how the scanners would work on different size buses, according to the update.<\/p>\n
\u201cFurther coordination with the vendor will take place to determine which bus or buses will be equipped and when the installation will occur,\u201d Metro staff said in the update. \u201cThe pilot has not yet been finalized.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Metro, systemwide violent crime in September 2025, the latest month for which data is available online, fell nearly 15% compared to last September.<\/p>\n
