BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK\/KBFX) \u2014 A man convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol and fatally striking a pedestrian on East California Avenue has been sentenced to 25 days in jail, three years’ probation, and must pay restitution and fines, according to the Kern County Superior Court website. <\/p>\n

Timothy Suniga pleaded no contest on Dec. 19, 2025, to the misdemeanor offense. <\/p>\n

The incident happened on May 9, 2025, when Bakersfield police responded to a crash on the 700 block of East California Avenue. <\/p>\n

Officers found a pedestrian with major injuries, who later died at a hospital. The investigation revealed the pedestrian, later identified as Anthony Gregory Martinez<\/a>, 34, of Bakersfield, was crossing outside a crosswalk when he was struck by Suniga’s vehicle. Another vehicle also hit the pedestrian. Both drivers remained at the scene.<\/p>\n

Suniga was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested.<\/p>\n

Suniga must also complete a DUI program, submit to alcohol testing, and may enroll in a work release program.
