In a city filled with weird robot cars, snub-nosed trucks, and hoverboards, it takes a lot for a vehicle to turn heads, but as I drove an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infinitemachine.com\/p1\/tech-spec?lp_location=wf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Infinite Machine (opens in new tab)<\/a> P1 on Valencia Street this week, gazes followed me like I was a nudist or a Jenner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Available for test drives over the next month from New York-based Infinite Machine\u2019s pop-up showroom in the Mission, the P1 is all sharp angles, anodized aluminum, and stainless steel flat planes. It packs a top speed of 65 mph and a 60-mile range, with room under the seat for a spare battery. Anyone with a drivers license can ride the P1 up to 30 mph. To unlock the top speeds, you need a motorcycle license.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Given our geek bona fides, SF is one of the company\u2019s biggest target markets. \u201cPeople are really excited about the latest and greatest in a unique way in San Francisco,\u201d Cohen said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">San Franciscans certainly love to ride on two wheels. The city is decked out with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfmta.com\/blog\/watch-san-franciscos-bike-network-bloom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">464 miles (opens in new tab)<\/a> of bike paths, according to Municipal Transportation Agency data from 2021. In September, Bay Wheels reported 458,000 bikeshare rides, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/bay-wheels-bike-station-21094848.php?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the biggest month  (opens in new tab)<\/a>to date, with overall ridership up 70% since ebikes were <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bayareametro.gov\/posts\/bay-wheels-bikeshare-expands-daly-city-coverage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">introduced (opens in new tab)<\/a> in 2023. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.ctfassets.net\/trvmqu12jq2l\/5AAyRdEX66k5HQTaVA7W6c\/2024d86b0dbe54d6dc8331628dfd28f2\/How_Two-wheeled_Deliveries_Report-R10.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">DoorDash (opens in new tab)<\/a> reported that 76% of SF deliveries are made on two wheels, the highest share of any U.S. city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Cohen, who has been building excitement on social media for a few months, found an eager audience in SF\u2019s tech scene, with many from the AI side of X tweeting about how much they want the \u201ccyberbike.\u201d The buzz reached a fever pitch last month, when AI startup founder Eugenia Kuyda <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ekuyda\/status\/1993377857247363487\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">floated (opens in new tab)<\/a> the idea of using a free P1 to incentivize an iOS engineer hire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">True to form, the first person to get a P1 in the Bay Area was Amjad Masad, CEO of vibe-coding startup Replit, who got his in September. He went shopping for an electric replacement but was \u201ctotally uninspired\u201d by what was available. At the time, Cohen was running Universe, a no-code website builder, but thought there might be an opportunity in mobility. He turned to his brother Eddie, a meditation accessory founder, and they began working on a prototype; both felt cooped up and needed a distraction. \u201cIt was a side project,\u201d he admitted. \u201cNights and weekends for three years.\u201d It wasn\u2019t until last year that Infinite Machines became a real company. It has raised $9.3 million from investors, including a16z, Correlation Ventures, and Cursor Capital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The electric scooter category was open for reinvention, said Badrul Farooqi of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cursorcapital.vc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Cursor (opens in new tab)<\/a>, noting that the moped he rode a decade ago looked basically the same as today\u2019s models. \u201cMost of the energy goes to redesigning cars,\u201d he said. \u201cRarely do people try to bring that level of ambition to non-cars.\u201d\u00a0 He liked that Infinite Machine is \u201ctrying to push the needle in existing categories\u201d with \u201cstriking products.\u201d Plus, it\u2019s fun: \u201cThe acceleration is great!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The scooter is a head-turner. It is the first two-wheeler I\u2019ve ridden that made pedestrians stop to ask what the hell I\u2019m riding. That\u2019s due to the Cybertruck vibes.
