Hundreds of new laws will officially be on the books come January 1, 2026. Many of them will have a direct impact on pretty much anyone who has a job. <\/p>\n
Senate Bill 3<\/a> will increase California’s minimum wage to $16.90 an hour to account for inflation, according to the legislation. Cameron Rosen, who works in the service industry, believes that while the increase is a step in the right direction, any further increases would result in pushback from business owners and corporations.<\/p>\n “I imagine that if they did that, the knee-jerk reaction is going to be raise prices,” said Rosen.<\/p>\n A report<\/a> released in October by the United Ways of California found that roughly 31% of households in San Diego County are struggling to make ends meet. A family of four, according to the report, would have to make around $116,000 a year to provide the basics. <\/p>\n “I don’t believe that raising the minimum wage is going to shut businesses down,” said Rosen. “If your business can’t afford to pay people for raising the minimum wage, something’s wrong with your business plan,” Rosen added.<\/p>\n In October, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 642<\/a> into law. The bill requires employers to post a realistic pay range reflecting what they will actually pay a new or prospective hire, as opposed to a broad salary range. For example, you might come across a job posting listing a salary range of $60,000 to $90,000.<\/p>\n SB 617<\/a> will require employers to provide advance, written notice when deciding to make mass layoffs. The final jobs report<\/a> of 2025 showed unemployment at 4.6% in November, marking a 4-year high. Thousands of people were laid off from major companies including Amazon, UPS, and Microsoft. <\/p>\n The legislation also requires employers to provide employees information on the statewide food assistance program, CalFresh. As Rosen puts it, in today’s job world, that can often be the difference between lining up a new job right away, or potentially ending up on the streets.<\/p>\n “It gives everyone a nice edge to know, like, okay, it’s coming. I better start looking, I better beef up my resume, I better take that course I could be taking,” said Rosen.<\/p>\n On the federal level, workers will be able to receive tax relief on overtime pay and tips. Industry workers who get tips can deduct up to $25,000 per year on their taxes, while people who work overtime can subtract the extra half of their overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a week. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hundreds of new laws will officially be on the books come January 1, 2026.
