(File photo courtesy of Marine Corps)<\/p>\n<p>A pilot has died following what the U.S. Marine Corps called \u201can aviation mishap\u201d involving a helicopter in a remote area east of Glamis.<\/p>\n<p>At approximately 7:05 p.m. Thursday, an AH-1Z Viper carrying a crew of two went down during a training operation near an unpopulated area of Imperial Gables, officials from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miramar.marines.mil\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Air Station Miramar<\/a> said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>The first pilot was transported to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley, but died. The pilot\u2019s identity has not been released.<\/p>\n<p>The second was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs and is in stable condition.<\/p>\n<p>The Viper was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) 369, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.<\/p>\n<p>Maj. Gen. James B. Wellons, the commanding general of 3rd MAW, said in a statement that \u201cit is with profound sadness that I share the loss of a Marine from 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and the \u201cGunfighters\u201d while conducting a training flight in support of the Marine Corps Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Marine made the ultimate sacrifice, and we are forever grateful for his selfless commitment and willingness to go into harm\u2019s way.
