Are you wondering, like Alixandra Kupcik, where did all the feel-good movies go<\/a>?<\/p>\n

She must have written that story before \u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d came out. Because Hugh Jackman passionately describing the greatness of Neil Diamond\u2019s \u201cSoolaimon\u201d and then demonstrating that song\u2019s grandeur by performing it in the new film \u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d is the definition of corny, feel-good comfort<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Which leads me to my question to you this day: Have you seen \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d? And what feelings \u2014 good, bad, uneasy, elated \u2014 did that movie arouse in you?<\/p>\n

Inside the reactions to \u2018Marty Supreme\u2019 \"Timothee <\/p>\n

He summited the Sphere<\/a>, exhorting us to \u201cdream big.\u201d He shot a rap music video<\/a> to debunk the conspiracy theory that he is a popular British rapper. He has popped up at screenings flanked by bodyguards sporting giant orange ping-pong balls for heads. <\/p>\n

Leading up to the Christmas Day premiere of his new movie, \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet was front and center in a promotional tour that was unhinged, delightful and, judging from the weekend\u2019s box office, quite successful.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d the wildly entertaining, over-caffeinated portrait of a single-minded ping-pong player, took in $27 million over the four-day Christmas weekend, the best opening in distributor A24\u2019s history. The numbers surpassed the opening of \u201cA Complete Unknown,\u201d last year\u2019s Chalamet Christmas release that featured the actor playing Bob Dylan in his formative years. <\/p>\n

Not everyone was on board with \u201cMarty.\u201d Moviegoers gave the movie<\/a> a B+ rating with market research company CinemaScore. That\u2019s good, but not great. (\u201cA Complete Unknown,\u201d by comparison, earned an A.)<\/p>\n

Podcaster Claira Curtis\u2019 experience seeing the movie at the Grove feels like an accurate representation<\/a> of the \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d adventure: \u201cPacked \u2018Marty Supreme theater had the full range of reactions. There were people walking out halfway through. There were people clapping. There was someone coming out of it saying, \u2018Eh, it was fine\u2019 & then their friend went, \u2018Are you insane? It was peak!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The disparate responses reflect a couple of things. <\/p>\n

One, not everyone embraces the Safdie brand of anxiety-inducing cinema. Josh Safdie directed \u201cMarty.\u201d His brother, Benny, made \u201cThe Smashing Machine,\u201d<\/a> released earlier this year. Together, they made \u201cUncut Gems\u201d<\/a> and \u201cGood Time,\u201d<\/a> movies that, take your pick, were exhilarating or excruciating. Or both! (Exclamation point intended. These are exclamation-point films.)<\/p>\n

And two, the title character in \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d is a lot \u2014 an undeniably talented, relentless self-promoter careening toward his goals of fame and fortune with little regard to the damage he is inflicting on others. He\u2019s despicable, but also, as played by Chalamet, winningly charming. Unless you find Chalamet annoying. Then you\u2019re probably best-served listening to Hugh Jackman sing Neil Diamond songs. <\/p>\n

Chalamet has channeled Marty\u2019s earnest energy in his promotional appearances for the film. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a movie about sacrifice in pursuit of a dream,\u201d he told Jimmy Fallon on \u201cThe Tonight Show.\u201d \u201cAnd it\u2019s something I can relate to deeply. And we live in a bleak time, especially for young people, so this film is an attempted antidote to that.\u201d <\/p>\n

Chalamet then pivoted to the camera, the better to look into viewers\u2019 eyes. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd to continue to believe in yourself and to continue to dream big and to follow your dreams and not take no for an answer. That\u2019s the spirit of \u2018Marty Supreme,\u2019 out on Christmas Day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judging from the box office, Chalamet has pushed across the message. Will it work on awards voters, giving Chalamet the first Oscar of his career? As we head into the new year, the next phase of the \u201cMarty\u201d tour promises to be the season\u2019s most interesting storyline. Gas up the blimp<\/a>!<\/p>\n
