(Photo courtesy of MTS)<\/p>\n<p>San Diego County\u2019s two transit agencies are offering free rides on buses, trolleys and trains on New Years Eve so that holiday revelers can end the year safely.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and continuing into the early morning hours Thursday, rides will be free for the <a href=\"http:\/\/sdmts.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego Metropolitan Transit System<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gonctd.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North County Transit District<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to complimentary\u00a0rides, both agencies are offering extra late-night service, with the last trolleys leaving downtown after 2 a.m., and the last COASTER train leaving at 1:20 a.m. <\/p>\n<p>On the SPRINTER in North County, there will be three later trains in each direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe end of the year should be about celebration \u2014 that\u2019s why MTS is\u00a0offering free rides on\u00a0New Year\u2019s Eve. We want everyone to\u00a0enjoy the moment\u00a0and also\u00a0get home safely,\u201d said Stephen Whitburn, MTS board chair and a San Diego city councilmember.<\/p>\n<p>By expanding service and\u00a0offering free rides\u00a0on one of the busiest nights of the year, the agencies aim to\u00a0discourage impaired driving, and ensure people get home safely as they welcome the new year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy offering free rides and extended late-night service on New Year\u2019s Eve, we\u2019re giving riders a reliable, responsible way to celebrate while ensuring everyone has a safe trip home.\u201d said NCTD Board Chair Priya Bhat-Patel, who is also mayor pro tem of Carlsbad.<\/p>\n<p>Detailed schedule and service information for each agency is available online at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdmts.com\/NewYearsEve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sdmts.com\/newyearseve<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gonctd.com\/NewYearsEve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">GoNCTD.com\/NewYearsEve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The free rides come during a time noted for drunk-driving arrests, and the California Highway Patrol has announced additional patrols during the period.<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A trolley in downtown San Diego at night.
