{"id":116273,"date":"2026-01-01T14:31:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T14:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/116273\/"},"modified":"2026-01-01T14:31:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T14:31:08","slug":"new-california-laws-for-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/116273\/","title":{"rendered":"New California Laws for 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-light-gray-background-color has-background\">Lea este art\u00edculo en espa\u00f1ol<a href=\"https:\/\/benitolink.com\/es\/new-california-laws-for-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aqu\u00ed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From AI user protections, low-cost insulin, and a plastic bag ban, Californians are seeing a number of new state laws take effect on Jan. 1, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other new state laws impact public and private schools, as well as the artificial intelligence industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Below is an incomplete list of California\u2019s new laws taking effect..\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AI<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB489\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 489<\/a>:\u00a0Prohibits AI chatbots from presenting themselves as doctors, nurses or other licensed professionals to increase transparency and prevent misrepresentation by chatbots.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB621\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 621<\/a>:\u00a0Strengthens protections against digital sexual exploitation by targeting the creation and distribution of AI-generated sexual content.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=d126bc6bcc&amp;e=21e4f087ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SB 53<\/a>:\u00a0Requires large AI developers to maintain documented risk-mitigation strategies to improve safety and transparency.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB243\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SB 243<\/a>:\u00a0Requires AI companies to include disclaimers that chatbots are not real people when used by minors and mandates safety protocols to prevent chatbots from encouraging self-harm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB524\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SB 524<\/a>:\u00a0Requires law enforcement agencies to disclose when AI tools are used to draft official police reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Animal Welfare<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=75ecee55cc&amp;e=21e4f087ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 867<\/a>\u00a0Bans non-therapeutic cat declawing statewide. Only medically necessary procedures performed by a licensed veterinarian are allowed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB506\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 506<\/a>: Requires pet sellers to disclose pet\u2019s origin and health information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB519\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 519<\/a>:\u00a0Prohibits third-party pet brokers, particularly online pet brokers, from selling cats, puppies and rabbits bred by others for profit in California.<\/p>\n<p>Education\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB419\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 419<\/a>: Requires schools to post information about students\u2019 rights regarding immigration enforcement in administrative offices and on school websites so families will understand that all children have the right to public education.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=1fdf869c95&amp;e=21e4f087ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 727<\/a>: Requires student ID cards issued by public middle schools and high schools and public colleges\/universities and includes a 24\/7 hotline for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trevor Project<\/a>. The hotline provides crisis and suicide prevention support to LGBTQ youth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=d0982c8649&amp;e=21e4f087ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 1264<\/a>: Removes the most concerning ultra-processed foods from being served at public schools, giving students healthier meals to improve nutrition and overall health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Employment\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB250\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 250<\/a>: Temporarily lifts the statute of limitations for adult survivors of workplace-related sexual assault cover-ups. From Jan. 1, 2026 through Dec. 21, 2027, victims can file civil claims regardless of when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=bc4ed07b56&amp;e=21e4f087ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SB 642<\/a>: Expands California\u2019s equal pay laws by broadening key definitions, extending the statute of limitations to three years (with recovery for up to six years) and clarifying categories of unlawful pay practices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 578<\/a>: Strengthens consumer and worker protection on food platforms by prohibiting companies from using tips to offset base pay, requiring itemized pay breakdowns for delivery workers, and mandating access to a real customer-service representative when automated systems cannot resolve an issue.<\/p>\n<p>Environment<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB1053\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SB 1053<\/a>: Strengthens California\u2019s plastic bag ban by closing loopholes that allowed thicker plastic film bags to be distributed as \u201creusable\u201d bags. The law eliminates plastic film checkout bags and requires retailers to transition to reusable bags that meet higher durability standards or to paper bags with recycled-content requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Family <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=d74e43bd39&amp;e=21e4f087ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 495<\/a>: Strengthens protections for immigrant parents and children by helping families in emergencies, protecting family privacy and preventing child facilities from collecting immigration-related information, especially if a parent is detained or separated.<\/p>\n<p>Health\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB798\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 798<\/a>: Expands the state emergency food bank program to include diapers and wipes for families with young children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB836\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 836<\/a>: Requires the Department of Health Care Access and Information to administer funding for a statewide midwifery education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mclist.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=afffa58af0d1d42fee9a20e55&amp;id=be2f2df7d1&amp;e=21e4f087ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SB 40<\/a>:\u00a0Large state-related health insurers must cap insulin copays at $35 for a 20-day supply, improving affordability for Californians who rely on insulin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB646\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SB 646<\/a>: Expands access to prenatal multivitamins to support healthy pregnancies and infant development.<\/p>\n<p>Housing\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.digitaldemocracy.org\/bills\/ca_202520260ab628\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AB 628<\/a>: Requires landlords to provide working stoves and refrigerators in rental units thus ensuring tenants have access to essential appliances.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB79\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SB 79<\/a>: Requires each county and city to adopt a comprehensive, long-term general plan for the development of the county or city and specified land outside its boundaries that contains certain mandatory elements, including a housing element.<\/p>\n<p>Law Enforcement<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB627\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SB 627<\/a>: Makes it a crime for a law enforcement officer to wear a facial covering in the performance of their duties, except as specified. The bill defines law enforcement officer as anyone designated by California law as a peace officer who is employed by a city, county, or other local agency and any officer or agent of a federal law enforcement agency or law enforcement agency of another state, or any person acting on behalf of a federal law enforcement agency or agency of another state.
