A trade completed between the Detroit Red Wings and the Anaheim Ducks by Steve Yzerman could end up being a mistake.<\/p>\n

Steve Yzerman can’t be happy with the way the Detroit Red Wings played in the first game of the franchise’s Centennial season.<\/p>\n

The training camp standout rookies couldn’t make a difference, the veteran group offered inconsistent effort throughout the game, and the offseason’s biggest acquisition, goaltender John Gibson<\/a>, delivered a terrible performance.<\/p>\n

In the past years, fans went through multiple disappointments regarding the goaltending department.<\/p>\n

Gibson finally made his Wings debut Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens, and it didn’t look good.<\/p>\n

NHL goalies can’t allow five goals on 13 shots. That’s not good enough.<\/p>\n

But we can’t evaluate a player after only one game. It’s much too early to say that Yzerman made a mistake by acquiring Gibson.<\/p>\n

After all, the cost to acquire him was reasonable, and the potential upside is very high.<\/p>\n

With his experience, Gibson knows that bouncing back is crucial for goalies, and that’s what he’ll need to do.<\/p>\n

In 506 career games, the goalie has a 2.89 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage, with a 204-217-63 record.<\/p>\n

Last season, he had a 2.77 GAA and a .912 SV% in 29 games.<\/p>\n
