FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) \u2014\u00a0Several serious crashes have happened in Fresno County and the surrounding area in recent weeks, and authorities say there are two major factors: poor weather and poor decision-making.<\/p>\n

Ahead of New Year\u2019s, Central California is bracing for another rainmaker to plague Valley roads, as the region is recovering from the impacts of last week\u2019s Christmas storm.<\/p>\n

Local law enforcement is urging drivers to use caution ahead of another busy holiday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you get fog, you get rain, slow down,\u201d said Fresno County Sheriff\u2019s Office spokesperson Tony Botti.<\/p>\n

That advice may seem simple, but California Highway Patrol officers say failing to adjust to poor conditions has been the leading cause of crashes in recent weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen there\u2019s anything on the ground, whether it be snow, ice, water, mud \u2014 I had one crash, actually, that involved manure. Anything that\u2019s on the ground and you see it, you need to slow down,\u201d said CHP Officer Anthony Daulton.<\/p>\n

Authorities say weather-related crashes aren\u2019t the only concern this time of year.<\/p>\n

The new year includes celebrations, and with them, an increase in impaired driving \u2014 something that claimed multiple lives in the Central Valley this holiday season.<\/p>\n

Monday, a husband and wife were\u00a0killed<\/a>\u00a0near Coalinga, when CHP investigators say 30-year-old Shawn Borecha swerved and collided with the couple head-on.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s extremely sad because you are literally seeing families\u2019 lives torn apart. You look at this recent couple in the Coalinga area. Somebody\u2019s missing their parents now, and this could have all been prevented,\u201d said Botti.<\/p>\n

This comes after CHP reported nearly 300 people were arrested for suspected DUI statewide during the holiday enforcement period.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the most selfish things you can do is have too much to drink and then be persistent in getting behind the wheel. Do you realize how many people you\u2019re putting in danger? It\u2019s one thing if you want to hurt yourself. But we know that the people on the road, they\u2019re defenseless against it,\u201d Botti said.<\/p>\n

Authorities say that if you\u2019re not in the right state of mind to drive or the weather conditions are poor, it\u2019s important to have a plan. They suggest leaving early, driving slowly, and, if necessary, finding a ride ahead of time.<\/p>\n
