As the new year begins, San Francisco residents across the city are making New Year\u2019s resolutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trisha Lee\u2019s goal for the year: To knit herself a sweater. \u201cI just ordered the yarn and tools last week,\u201d Lee said. The yarn she chose is light blue, light orange, and light yellow.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lee imagined what Emma\u2019s resolution might be: \u201cProbably to be more independent. She is clingy. She comes everywhere with us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

McCracken has a more lofty goal: to write a poem a day. Though he\u2019s only ever written poetry \u201cmandated in school\u201d he just wrote three poems in Christmas cards \u2014 one for his parents, one for Lee\u2019s parents, and a limerick for Lee.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI stick to haikus normally, but I\u2019d like to try other styles,\u201d McCracken said.<\/p>\n

Tony Pizza chose a word, a color, and an animal to carry with him through the year: discomfort, black and the beaver.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlack is a little bit like death and the beaver is an industrious homemaker,\u201d Pizza said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His wife, Kristy Pizza, wants to \u201cembrace transition\u201d and be \u201creally present with my family and kids. I have a senior, so it\u2019s the last year with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also aims to read 70 books \u2013 books on self-help, enlightenment and \u201cmeaningful\u201d fiction.<\/p>\n

Kristy wasn\u2019t the only one who wants to read more \u2014 it was by far the most popular resolution of everyone Mission Local spoke with.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rachel Halilej\u2019s goal is to read 20 books this year, focusing on \u201cfun\u201d mysteries and character dramas.<\/p>\n

William Turmon hopes to read more about economics, history, and social causes. A favorite of his this year was The High Cost of Free Parking by Donald Shoup, which criticizes the minimum parking requirements that many American cities have.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gerard Morales also wants to read more and \u201cstay off my phone for much longer durations of time. Less doomscrolling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adrienne Rios hopes to break her DoorDashing habit. \u201cIt\u2019s gotten way too expensive,\u201d she said. \u201cI mean, you\u2019re paying $7 just to order a pizza.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many are hoping for big things for themselves in the new year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2026, I want to just really go for everything,\u201d said Liam, who is getting an associate\u2019s degree in Kinesiology to become a physical therapist. \u201cIf I want something, I want to apply myself and see how close I get to it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Liam enjoys helping patients rehab from knee injuries. \u201cWhen they\u2019re healing it\u2019s humbling,\u201d Liam said. \u201cPeople come out a lot stronger and often have totally different perceptions about working and the type of life they\u2019re living.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don Kim\u2019s New Year\u2019s resolution is to \u201cbe a better father, husband and grow my business tenfold. Hockey stick growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

He runs a screenprinting business called 13 Gallons in the Outer Mission, just south of the San Francisco-Daly City border. Recently, they\u2019ve been making a lot of merch for AI companies, but they\u2019ve also made merch for June Jordan High School in the Excelsior, San Francisco City Football Club, and the Daly City Fire Department.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe made their hats and their uniforms,\u201d Kim said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Others are looking to take a step back from work, including tech worker Samiha Binte Hassan whose resolution is to be \u201cfun-employed because I\u2019m worked to death.\u201d<\/p>\n

She wants to \u201cgracefully let go of my work and recover for three months.\u201d<\/p>\n

The other day, Binte Hassan was watching the Bollywood movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which follows a group of three friends taking a road trip across Spain.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I used to watch this movie as a kid I used to think of the guy who\u2019s a workaholic, \u2018How do you get to that stage? Yuck,\u2019\u201d said Binte Hassan. \u201cAnd I saw the movie the other day and I was like, \u2018Oh no, this is bad.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Luna, accompanied by her dog Chiquita, is aiming to keep \u201cthinking positive\u201d in the new year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI was coming from trauma before I got into recovery,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a year and a half that I\u2019ve not been drinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel good about myself that I\u2019m going to make it to 56.\u201d<\/p>\n

A woman in the Panhandle who declined to give her name is also looking to make some permanent lifestyle changes this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt turns out that I have a problem with the valves that return the blood to my heart in my legs. And so I probably need to quit sugar and wheat for real,\u201d she said. In past years, she\u2019s done Dry January and quit sugar and wheat for the one month.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She\u2019ll also need to elevate her feet three times a day, wear compression socks, and do physical therapy exercises.<\/p>\n

The trade-off for her health is worth it, though she\u2019ll miss sugar a lot. \u201cI think life is still worth living, but Bi-Rite salted caramel ice cream is very good.\u201d<\/p>\n
