The project will be conducted in two phases, requiring temporary lane closures.<\/p>\n<p>During construction, crews will remove the speed humps on a section of I-5 near the southbound inspection booths. Additionally, temporary traffic control barriers will be replaced with more permanent, poured-in-place dividers, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the federal government\u2019s landlord, GSA continues to invest in our (land ports of entry) and work jointly with regional partners to ensure our nation\u2019s ports promote safe and secure trade and travel,\u201d Administrator Edward C. Forst said in a statement. \u201cWe understand that construction can be disruptive, and we are working closely with Caltrans to minimize the impact on the traveling public and deliver these important improvements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first phase of the project includes a 56-hour closure of the six westernmost lanes of the I-5 freeway toward Tijuana from San Ysidro, as well as the Camino de la Plaza I-5 south on-ramp. Closures for this phase will take place from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Friday.\n<\/p>\n<p>Officials said the southbound lanes of Interstate 805 and I-5 will be tapered as the two merge and drivers approach the border. (U.S. General Services Administration)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSan Ysidro is home to one of the busiest border crossings in the world, which is critical to our region\u2019s economy,\u201d Caltrans District 11 Chief Deputy Director Everett Townsend said in a statement. \u201cAny effort to improve the safe flow of traffic across the border is welcome. Caltrans looks forward to working with the GSA on these important enhancements and minimizing impact to the traveling public during this work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials also urged drivers to monitor traffic signs and reduce their speed near the construction work area.<\/p>\n<p>The California Highway Patrol said it will increase traffic enforcement in the area and share traffic updates on its social media accounts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2024\/04\/09\/whats-the-deal-with-the-long-vehicle-lines-to-cross-into-tijuana-the-fix-could-take-a-while\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Previous estimates<\/a> by Mexican officials indicate that about 50,000 vehicles cross the border from San Ysidro to Tijuana daily through the El Chaparral crossing.
