A construction team made a shocking discovery at the Port of Long Beach on Wednesday afternoon when they inadvertently unearthed a World War II-era explosive device, authorities said.

The eight-decade-old shell was found at one of the port’s six container terminals, according to a port spokesperson.

The Long Beach police and fire departments and the U.S. Coast Guard evacuated the terminal and established a safety perimeter, while the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad responded and assessed the situation. The remaining terminals continued to operate as normal during that time.

A U.S. Marine Corps ordnance disposal team determined that the device was safe to transport and moved it off site, where it was deactivated.

The port resumed normal operations Wednesday night.

A construction team made a shocking discovery at the Port of Long Beach on Wednesday afternoon when they…

[33
6577,4019,11054,11059,11055,11057,11056,131,133,132,63,11062,1284,11061,11058,4450,11060
post-12003","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-long-beach","tag-authority","tag-construction","tag-container-terminal","tag-department-bomb-squad","tag-explosive","tag-fire-department","tag-l-a-county-sheriff","tag-long-beach","tag-long-beach-headlines","tag-long-beach-news","tag-los-angeles-times","tag-normal-operation-wednesday-night","tag-port","tag-safety-perimeter","tag-shocking-discovery","tag-u-s-coast-guard","tag-wednesday-afternoon
["GET
