Other projects, such as the ferry landing renovation, were brought to completion.

The road repair portion was $2.9 million and ranged from grinding and resurfacing to microsealing and crack sealing, a public works staff report said.

“There was a long period where the city said we don’t have money, we can’t spend money, we don’t want to do this, we don’t want to do that,” Woodside said. “Now that door has opened pretty wide. We do not have a lot of money but we’re devoting so much of it to capital projects that are much needed.”

Assembling the prospective project list involved surveying and assessing the city’s 26 miles of roads and other infrastructure.

“Sausalito has been on the low end of the road quality index in Marin,” said Councilmember Ian Sobieski. “It is easy to lose track of the scale of the investment we are making.”

The most costly potential upcoming projects include grinding and resurfacing Alexander Avenue from the city’s southern limit to South Street, an estimated $208,000 job. Repaving Sausalito Boulevard from Edwards Avenue to Crescent Avenue would cost an estimated $419,000. Repairing and microsealing the southbound lanes of Bridgeway from Spring Street to Johnson Street would cost an estimated $274,000.

Other pricier potential projects include microsealing and reconditioning Olima Street from Ebbtide Avenue to Coloma Street, $148,000; microsealing Lincoln Drive from Butte Street to Nevada Street, $86,000; repairing and replacing concrete on Pine Street from Caledonia Street to Bridgeway, $60,000; microsealing and reconditioning Currey Avenue from Glen Drive to Crecienta Drive, $57,000; slurry-sealing Caledonia Street from Napa Street to Pine Street, $56,000; and microsealing and reconditioning Marie Street from Filbert Avenue to the steps to Woodward Avenue, $56,000.

Multiple projects are listed for stretches of Currey Avenue, Filbert Avenue, Glen Drive, Johnson Street and Turney Street.

The public works department report also lists some major projects that do not have price estimates, such as grinding and resurfacing Second Street.

The report also noted that some council members have suggested resurfacing all of Bridgeway at one time. “However, if we are maintaining the same budget for resurfacing, other roads that are not arterial will continue to deteriorate,” it said.

The next steps involve finalizing the list, which will be the focus of a special council meeting on Jan. 31. After that, final designs will be engineered, reviewed, finalized and put out to bid.

“Government can work for you,” Sobieski said. “We are making the largest investments in our history and part of that is overcoming cynicism of people who said it couldn’t be done.”

Sausalito plans to seek public comments on 60 possible paving projects that would start in the summer.
