Last night, January 4, Jeff Tweedy launched his residency at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles. The run, billed as an intimate solo concert series, preceded the release of his latest triple album, Twilight Override. Whereas recent concerts have drawn extensively from the new arrival, Sunday\u2019s show was a diverse assortment of material that spanned different eras of Tweedy\u2019s career: pre-aughts Mermaid Avenue, Wilco, Loose Fur, Golden Smog, and a heavy pour of solo songs from across his personal discography.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sunday\u2019s performance in the City of Angels was set into motion by a feature off Tweedy\u2019s new LP, the set\u2019s third disc to be exact. \u201cThis Is How It Ends\u201d christened the onset of the residency kick-off, and was succeeded by a featured track off Loose Fur\u2019s 2003 self-titled debut, \u201cLaminated Cat.\u201d Tweedy positioned the new number \u201cCaught Up in the Past\u201d next, before the spoken word entry of \u201cParking Lot,\u201d \u201cThere\u2019s a version of me that hangs out in parking lots\/ In my brain or my subconscious\/ Whatever\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Continuing with his tour de aughts, Tweedy pulled the title track of Sky Blue Sky (Wilco\u2019s first studio record to feature Nels Cline), before fetching \u201cThe Ruling Class\u201d from his Loose Fur days with Glen Kotche and Sonic Youth\u2019s Jim O\u2019Rourke, and Golden Smog\u2019s \u201cPlease Tell My Brother.\u201d According to Setlist.FM<\/a>, \u201cWedding Cake\u201d represented a debut, one of the darkest tracks off the new LP, \u201cMy blood\u2019s in the sink\/ It\u2019s not what you think\/ I\u2019ll be OK.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Next, Tweedy pulled out fan favorite \u201cImpossible Germany,\u201d before embracing the notion of love, aging, and fading dreams on \u201cOne by One.\u201d The move functioned as a preview of the Solid Sound Festival\u2019s impending 25th-anniversary concert of Mermaid Avenue, the album featuring lyrics by Woody Guthrie and set to music by Wilco and Billy Bragg. Before concluding the set, Tweedy added another feature of Twilight Override, \u201cStray Cats in Spain,\u201d and set ender\/Cousin\u2019s favorite, \u201cEvicted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Upon his return for the evening\u2019s encore, Tweedy brought with him sons, Spencer and Sammy, both heavily featured on their dad\u2019s latest LP. The family band seized another from the Mermaid Avenue batch, on \u201cCalifornia Stars.\u201d After, they jumped to a present-day release on \u201cLou Reed Was My Babysitter,\u201d and ultimately ended the night after Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sweet spot, \u201cI\u2019m The Man Who Loves You.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Tweedy\u2019s residency ensues tonight.
