(File photo by Times of San Diego staff)<\/p>\n<p>It hasn\u2019t even been a week, but San Diego city officials are already requesting another look at the much-maligned <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/life\/2026\/01\/03\/balboa-park-parking-fees-guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parking fees<\/a> that went into effect on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2026\/01\/05\/missing-signs-confusing-discounts-and-unpleasant-surprise-mar-first-day-of-paid-parking-in-balboa-park\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Monday<\/a> at Balboa Park. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, city officials say there will be a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kpbs.org\/news\/quality-of-life\/2026\/01\/05\/paid-parking-begins-in-balboa-park-parking-passes-available-online\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grace period<\/a>\u201d for parking enforcement for at least a few weeks, but exactly when that ends is unclear.  <\/p>\n<p>Council President Pro Tem Kent Lee and Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera put out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-01\/cd6-memo-260106.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a joint statement<\/a> on Tuesday evening recommending that the city suspend the fees until further notice, citing a disjointed rollout with little information readily available to residents and waves of public criticism. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, as the administration is aware, there was a scramble recently to affix information regarding resident discounts to the parking payment kiosks,\u201d the statement went on. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also a rush to manufacture signs to inform visitors they can park for free for three hours in the lower Inspiration Point parking lot \u2014 essential information that is currently missing from the park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that these critical steps are being taken at the last minute, including the signs, which won\u2019t be ready for days if not weeks, shows a clear example that this program is not yet ready for prime time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Discounted rates <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/03\/san-diegans-can-buy-resident-passes-for-balboa-park-parking-enforced-monday\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are available<\/a> to San Diego residents, but that process has not been made particularly clear.<\/p>\n<p> There has also not been enough of an effort to educate the public on how to use the system, including when to register for passes, how to buy discounted passes, and when enforcement will begin, the letter added.<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A new parking sign off Balboa Drive at Quince Street in Balboa Park, with a kiosk seen in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":118917,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[28],"tags":[4549,63932,3683,64740,20680,74,76,75,21524,3235],"class_list":["post-123853","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-balboa-park","tag-balboa-park-parking-fees","tag-city-of-san-diego","tag-kent-lee","tag-parking-fees","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news","tag-sean-elo-rivera","tag-todd-gloria"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/123853","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=123853"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/123853\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/118917"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=123853"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=123853"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=123853"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
