(WCIA) \u2014 A school district in Oakland was the victim of a cybersecurity attack over its holiday break, and the situation is under investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a press release, Oakland Community School District 5 said immediately after they detected this unauthorized access, they engaged with cybersecurity experts. With their help, the district was able to fully secure and recover all of its systems by the end of their holiday break.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/mattoon-woman-accused-embezzling-25k-235919224.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mattoon woman accused of embezzling $25K from elderly man pleads guilty to theft;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Mattoon woman accused of embezzling $25K from elderly man pleads guilty to theft <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The district also said that there was no impact to students or staff regarding this incident, and that they remain in communication with law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The district said the suspects involved in this attack demanded payment from the district but said they did not pay them any amount of money. They were then able to fully recover by utilizing their backup systems, without any assistance from the suspects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The district said as the investigation into this remains ongoing, they do not believe that any sensitive student data was affected. And for staff, they said they also believe that none of their human resources or payroll systems were impacted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhile this cyber incident stressed our resilience and capabilities, I\u2019m proud of the fact that we were able to overcome it,\u201d Oakland CUSD #5 said in its release. \u201cIt is a testament to our preparedness, resilience, and grit. We will learn from this event and adjust our cybersecurity posture where appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">WCIA reached out to the Oakland Police Department and Coles County Sheriff\u2019s Office for more information and is waiting to hear back from both agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
