A high school student was injured in an off-campus shooting Thursday in Long Beach, and police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.<\/p>\n
The student, who attends Long Beach Polytechnic High School, was shot about 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and 17th Street, a Long Beach Unified School District spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n
He arrived at the school shortly afterward and was taken to a hospital by emergency responders, according to the district.<\/p>\n
The school at 1600 Atlantic Ave. is two blocks away from the shooting location.<\/p>\n
School staff rendered support and first aid to the student before he was transported, the district said.<\/p>\n
The extent of his injury was unclear.<\/p>\n
Long Beach police said officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 1700 block of Long Beach Boulevard about 8:25 a.m. and found evidence of a shooting but no victim.<\/p>\n
Officers were later notified that a 15-year-old boy was being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his lower body, according to the police.<\/p>\n
The suspect fled before officers arrived, police said.<\/p>\n
The school \u201cremains safe,\u201d with school security maintaining an increased campus presence as a precaution, according to the district.<\/p>\n
Long Beach police were investigating the shooting, including the motive and the identity of the suspect.<\/p>\n
