FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) \u2014 The teen boy prosecutors say shot and killed Caleb Quick at a Clovis McDonald\u2019s in April returned to court on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The hearing was just four minutes long and closed to cameras.<\/p>\n
The boy, whom Action News is not naming due to his age, walked in with his hands folded and wore a purple shirt.<\/p>\n
His parents sat behind him. Caleb\u2019s father was on the other side of the courtroom.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think he realizes the devastation he\u2019s caused for himself and my family,\u201d Stephen Quick told Action News.<\/p>\n
He wants the boy \u2013 and the girl prosecutors say drove him away in a white Tesla \u2014 to be tried as adults. The teens have each denied murder charges.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t want to put it out there that this is OK behavior for kids to do,\u201d Stephen said.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors are now pursuing a high-stakes transfer hearing to move the case to adult criminal court, where the punishment is longer.<\/p>\n
The girl\u2019s hearing is set for March. The boy\u2019s is now delayed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is just a huge case, and there\u2019s a lot, a lot of discovery, and so it takes a long time to go through it,\u201d defense attorney Kathy Bird told Action News.<\/p>\n
She and co-attorney Mark Coleman are still combing through evidence and have hired a forensic psychologist to interview their client.<\/p>\n
They are looking for anything to keep him in the juvenile system and have found a possible defense.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe there were numerous concussions, and we\u2019re delving into that,\u201d Bird said. \u201cThere could be some traumatic brain injuries from the concussions.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s an excuse,\u201d Stephen said. He believes the alleged shooter knew what he was doing as he tracked Caleb for 13 minutes and followed him outside.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had a concussion when I was in sixth grade. I turned out OK,\u201d Stephen said. \u201cI never put a gun to someone\u2019s head and pulled the trigger.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"FRESNO, Calif.
