FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — All week long, Fresno Unified students had free rein to be as creative as they could be.<\/p>\n
Second-grade student Celina Castro shifted a doodle into a design for a custom tote bag that she helped make herself.<\/p>\n
“It has a little bubble, it has my nickname and then it has cherries,” Celina said.<\/p>\n
After creating her image, the staff printed it out. Celina peeled, placed it and then helped make it permanent.<\/p>\n
She’s part of the 3,000 FUSD students who participated in one of the 40 week-long Winter Camps.<\/p>\n
This camp was the Digital Illustration, Design and Screen printing course put on by district partners KLSD Education.<\/p>\n
CEO and owner Alexandra Register says this is the fourth year they’ve partnered with the district to offer the camp.<\/p>\n
“We teach students the ins and outs of illustration and graphic design, and then screen printing is one of the production methods that we teach them here at our camp,” Register said.<\/p>\n
TK to twelfth-grade students were split into two rooms.<\/p>\n
While Celina and friends took on the totes, third-grade student Nyeli Conley got to help screen print shirts.<\/p>\n
They also got to pick out patches to put on a hat. The placement? Completely up to them.<\/p>\n
The excitement had them counting down to completion.<\/p>\n
The District Director of Expanded Learning, Connie Cha, says the district provides students with a variety of camp options from athletics to arts.<\/p>\n
“I always want students to have fun learning and to find new innovative ways to build new skills, to discover new interests,” Cha said.<\/p>\n
For students like Celina, she says she enjoys the opportunity because she leaves with more than just what she designed.<\/p>\n
“I like it because it’s really fun and sometimes, you get to make friends,” Celina said.<\/p>\n
There will be many programs offered similar to this one during summer camps. Registration for summer sessions typically starts in May.<\/p>\n
