BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Long Beach State was unable to recover from a difficult second quarter and fell 75-48 to CSU Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon at the Icardo Center.<\/p>\n

The Beach opened the game competitively, trading baskets early and briefly holding a 2-0 lead following a jumper from JaQuoia Jones-Brown<\/a>. LBSU remained within striking distance through much of the first quarter before CSU Bakersfield closed the period on a late surge to take a 25-16 advantage after one.<\/p>\n

The second quarter proved decisive. The Beach was held to just one point in the period, going 0-for-14 from the field as the Roadrunners used defensive pressure to extend the margin to 47-17 at halftime.<\/p>\n

Jones-Brown led the Beach offensively, finishing with a team-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. Rosie Akot<\/a> added eight points, while Brynna Pukis<\/a> provided a spark off the bench, scoring 11 points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from the field, including three triples.<\/p>\n

LBSU showed resilience after the break, winning the fourth quarter 20-13. The Beach shot 41.2 percent from the field in the final period and connected on four three-pointers, highlighted by late baskets from Pukis and Khylee Pepe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite the improved second-half effort, the early deficit was too large to overcome. CSU Bakersfield shot 48.3 percent from the field for the game and finished with a 43-36 rebounding advantage.<\/p>\n

Long Beach State remains on the road, traveling to the Inland Empire next to face UC Riverside. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 15.
