More than 4,000 protesters took to the streets<\/a> throughout the county over the weekend in response to a U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officer shooting a Minneapolis woman in the face, killing her, continue to reverberate throughout the country.<\/p>\n

An Encinitas rally on Saturday drew more than a thousand protesters, while another in Escondido saw more than 500. Most of the locations<\/a> drew hundreds, but even one in Julian saw at least 42 people protesting the shooting.<\/p>\n

ICE officer Jonathan Ross fired a shot into the front left windshield of Renee Good\u2019s SUV on Wednesday and two more into her open driver\u2019s side window, killing her immediately. She was unarmed and not threatening him at the time. <\/p>\n

Those at the scene and millions more in a now-viral video saw a different ICE officer attempt to open Good\u2019s driver\u2019s side door before the 37- year-old mother of three reversed and turned her wheels to the right in an apparent attempt to leave the scene before Ross approached the front of the vehicle, then fired.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump and others in his administration have claimed without evidence that Good was a danger to the officers.<\/p>\n

However, the shooting, and the administration\u2019s attempts to defend it, have been strongly condemned by the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn ICE agent shot and killed a U.S. citizen and mother, and the Trump Administration\u2019s response has been to obscure the facts rather than own the consequences,\u201d San Diego County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the federal government responds to the loss of life with spin instead of accountability, people must speak out \u2014 peacefully, with care for one another, and moral clarity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawson-Remer called for peaceful protests.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeaceful protest is how communities have always forced change and defended democracy,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is strongest when it is grounded in nonviolence, mutual care, and moral clarity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard Cannon, an organizer with 50501 North County San Diego, also denounced the administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president has openly embraced the use of violence against those he perceives as his enemies or those who speak out against him, whether directing a mob of angry people to invade the Capitol in an attempt to overturn an election, showing disdain and disregard of political assassinations (unless he believes they are on `his side\u2019), or suggesting his followers assault protesters,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are at least five people who have died as a direct result of this top-down direction and agents\u2019 lawless behavior, and it seems inevitable they will continue to operate without transparency or regard for the public\u2019s safety until the American people demand and force accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n
