(FOX26) \u2014 Republican leaders in Fresno County are calling on national officials to condemn violence against Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.<\/p>\n<p>Fresno County Supervisor Garry Bredefeld led a press conference Tuesday condemning what he described as a growing wave of violence against ICE officers, following the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/kmph.com\/news\/nation-world\/minneapolis-shooting-cellphone-video-fuels-local-debate-over-ice-agents-deadly-force-ice-border-patrol-protest-seattle-washington-state-pierce-county-sheriff-keith-swank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ICE agent&#8217;s deadly force in Minneapolis. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI personally strongly condemn the growing attacks on ICE agents,\u201d Bredefeld said.<\/p>\n<p>Bredefeld rejected claims that ICE poses a threat to local communities, instead, pointing to what he called increasing lawlessness tied to protests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cICE is not a danger or a threat to our community,\u201d Bredefeld said. <\/p>\n<p>During the press conference, Bredefeld cited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2026\/01\/08\/radical-rhetoric-sanctuary-politicians-leads-unprecedented-1300-increase-assaults#:~:text=WASHINGTON%20%E2%80%94%20Today%2C%20the%20U.S.%20Department,encourages%20rampant%20assaults%20against%20them.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new data from the Department of Homeland Security<\/a> showing a sharp rise in vehicular attacks against ICE officers.<\/p>\n<p> According to DHS, from January 21, 2025, through January 7, 2026, ICE officers experienced 66 vehicular attacks, compared with two during the same period the year before, a more than 3,000% increase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is evidenced by the 3,200% increase,\u201d Bredefeld said.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, ICE reports a significant increase in staffing, announcing a 120% manpower boost by early January 2026, adding roughly 12,000 officers and agents as part of a nationwide hiring effort.<\/p>\n<p>The press conference came just days after anti-ICE protests were held in several cities, including one on Sunday along Blackstone and Nees avenues <a href=\"https:\/\/kmph.com\/news\/local\/protesters-in-fresno-rally-against-ice-and-trump-administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in Fresno<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Tensions briefly surfaced during Tuesday&#8217;s press conference when a reporter asked Bredefeld whether he had seen any threats against ICE locally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not. No,\u201d Bredefeld replied.<\/p>\n<p>When asked why it was still important to speak out now, Bredefeld responded sharply, referring to national developments.<\/p>\n<p>No local policy changes or enforcement were announced at the press conference. However, some leaders said their message extends beyond party lines.<\/p>\n<p>Supervisor Nathan Magsig said, <\/p>\n<p>Our country is hurting and we need to recognize that pain,\u201d Magsig said. \u201cIt\u2019s hurting on the left and it\u2019s hurting on the right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"FRESNO, Calif.
