BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK\/KBFX) \u2014 Former Kern County Supervisor Zack Scrivner was granted mental health diversion on Dec. 19, 2025, sparking intense reactions<\/a> and calls for accountability. <\/p>\n

Scrivner, initially charged with three felony counts of alleged child abuse and two felony counts of alleged possession of assault weapons, was allowed to enter a court-approved treatment program instead of continuing through the justice system. If successfully completed, the charges could be dismissed.<\/p>\n

Lauren Skidmore of the Open Door Network<\/a> expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, stating, “We don’t feel like the decision was fair and we don’t feel like all the facts of the case are being considered.” Skidmore launched a petition <\/a>to raise awareness and push for change, which has garnered over 2,000 signatures.<\/p>\n

H.A. Sala, Scrivner’s defense attorney, supported the judge’s decision, saying, “It was the right decision that the judge made based on the facts and circumstances of the case.”<\/p>\n

The case has drawn reactions from lawmakers, including California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Sen. Shannon Grove, and Dr. Jasmeet Bains, all demanding accountability. Congressman Vince Fong stated, “Crimes involving the abuse of children should never be tolerated,” urging state lawmakers to ensure laws are enforced to protect victims. Congressman David Valadao called for transparency and accountability, suggesting the U.S. Department of Justice review the case to determine if justice was adequately served.<\/p>\n
