Growth in exports offsets soft import numbers amid uneven global trade conditions<\/p>\n
Oakland, Calif. \u2013 Jan. 14, 2026: The Port of Oakland handled\u00a0179,580 twenty-foot containers\u00a0(TEUs)\u00a0in December 2025, a\u00a0slight\u00a01.7% decrease\u00a0from\u00a0year-over-year\u00a0totals,\u00a0as the Port closed out the\u00a0calendar\u00a0year with stable overall cargo volumes despite uneven global trade conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Full containerized cargo totaled\u00a0140,050 TEUs, down\u00a03.0%\u00a0compared to December 2024. Loaded imports declined\u00a012.8%, while loaded exports increased\u00a010.9%,\u00a0with imports softening as export activity strengthened during the month.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Empty container volumes reached 39,530 TEUs, an increase of 3.4% year over year,\u00a0reflecting continued equipment repositioning at the end of the year.\u00a0On a month-to-month basis, December volumes\u00a0rose\u00a0slightly compared to November, consistent with normal year-end shipping patterns.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cDecember reflected the kind of\u00a0uneven performance\u00a0we\u2019ve seen across the industry, with softer imports and strong export activity,\u201d said\u00a0Bryan Brandes, Port of Oakland Maritime Director. \u201cThat\u00a0difference\u00a0is more about\u00a0timing and adjustment than any fundamental change in demand.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

For the full calendar year 2025, the Port of Oakland handled\u00a02,253,976 TEUs, finishing the year\u00a0essentially flat\u00a0(-0.4%) compared to 2024\u2014a notable outcome amid\u00a0ongoing economic and policy uncertainty.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Total import TEUs declined 0.9%, while export TEUs increased slightly by 0.1%, resulting in a\u00a0balanced\u00a050\/50 import-export split\u00a0for the year. Full containers accounted for approximately 77% of total volume, consistent with recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIn an environment defined by uncertainty,\u00a0maintaining\u00a0stability\u00a0matters,\u201d Brandes said. \u201cOur focus throughout the year was on\u00a0keeping cargo moving reliably and predictably, ensuring customers could continue to move\u00a0goods\u00a0efficiently as trade\u00a0conditions\u00a0shifted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
