The late Grateful Dead<\/a> legend Bob Weir<\/a> will be remembered in his hometown, San Francisco, this weekend with a special commemoration of his life and career.<\/p>\n

\u201cHomecoming: Celebrating the life of Bobby Weir,\u201d a free public gathering,\u00a0will move through SF this\u00a0Saturday, Jan. 17\u00a0at\u00a0Civic Center Plaza, starting at 3:45pm ET.<\/p>\n

\u201cHomecoming\u201d will remember Weir, whose \u201cmusic, spirit and humanity shaped generation,\u201d reads a statement from organizers. \u201cTogether, we will pay tribute in the community and collective heartbeat that he created.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reps say this weekend\u2019s salute is not a concert and there will be no live performances, but will instead center on \u201cgratitude, remembrance, and togetherness,\u201d along with special tributes to honor the late artist.<\/p>\n

A procession will travel three blocks down Market Street between 7th and 9th Streets at approximately 3:30pm ET.<\/p>\n

Weir, the guitarist and jam-band pioneer who co-founded the Grateful Dead and continued their legacy in the 21st century with Furthur, Dead & Company and more, died last week due to underlying lung issues after fighting cancer. He was 78. And he was one of San Francisco\u2019s most treasured sons.<\/p>\n

In a career spanning six decades, Weir was key to developing the Grateful Dead from garden-variety psychedelic rockers as the Warlocks to godfathers of the jam band genre. Weir\u2019s loping, syncopated guitar style,\u00a0modeled after<\/a>\u00a0\u201cMcCoy Tyner\u2019s left hand,\u201d may not have made much sense in a traditional rock band, but to the Dead, it was a crucial puzzle piece.<\/p>\n

The band survived through health scares, drug issues and changing moods in music, and remained together and vital until Jerry Garcia\u2019s death in 1995, performing\u00a0over 2,300 concerts<\/a>\u00a0and selling\u00a0over 35 million albums<\/a>. After they disbanded, Weir stayed busy with band offshoots and new projects, and In 2017, he was appointed a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for his efforts to fight climate change while\u00a0serving on the board<\/a>\u00a0of the company Tribal Planet. \u201cI\u2019d also like to see people reflexively consider the good of the planet in the choices they regularly make,\u201d\u00a0he told\u00a0Billboard<\/a>\u00a0in 2017.<\/p>\n
