The cosmic and legendary life of Bob Weir<\/a> will be celebrated this weekend in San Francisco, in a public event on Saturday, Jan. 17.<\/p>\n

\u201cHomecoming: Celebrating the Life of Bobby Weir\u201d will kick off at 12:45 p.m. PT at Civic Center Plaza adjacent to San Francisco\u2019s City Hall, and will feature multiple speakers, according to organizers, including SF mayor Daniel Lurie, who paid his respects<\/a> to Weir on Monday at the Grateful Dead<\/a>\u2018s Haight-Ashbury house. The gathering will be preceded by a procession traveling three blocks down Market Street between 7th and 9th Streets at approximately 12:30 p.m. PT.<\/p>\n

The news of Weir\u2019s death broke last weekend<\/a>, when his family announced he\u2019d \u201csuccumbed to underlying lung issues\u201d after he was diagnosed with cancer in July 2025. \u201cOne of the things that I hope that I\u2019m remembered for is bringing our culture and other cultures together \u2014 by virtue or by example of,\u201d he told <\/a>Rolling Stone<\/a> earlier that year, in our final conversation<\/a> with the guitarist. \u201cI\u2019m hoping that people of varying persuasions will find something they can agree on in the music that I\u2019ve offered, and find each other through it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jerry Garcia\u2019s memorial was held at nearby Golden Gate Park in Aug. 1995, where Weir publicly thanked the frontman<\/a> for \u201cshowing me how to live with joy, with mischief.\u201d Weir spent the next 30 years carrying the Grateful Dead torch in several bands and offshoots \u2014 most recently Dead & Company \u2014 alongside late bassist Phil Lesh<\/a> and drummers Mickey Hart<\/a> and Bill Kretuzmann. The world continues to mourn the loss of Weir, from his Dead & Co. bandmates <\/a>to celebrities <\/a>like Bob Dylan, Heart\u2019s Nancy Wilson, and the Eagles\u2019 Don Felder.<\/p>\n
