FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Dense fog delayed and canceled flights at Fresno Yosemite International Airport on Friday, forcing some travelers to change plans at the last minute and turn back home.<\/p>\n
Mariana and Julian Carrasco drove more than an hour to the airport before learning their flight had been delayed because of low visibility across much of the Central Valley.<\/p>\n
“We’re really annoyed, because we didn’t get the notification until we were here,” Mariana Carrasco said.<\/p>\n
The couple said the delay caused them to miss an important pre-operative appointment scheduled ahead of a surgery. Despite their frustration, they said safety remained the priority.<\/p>\n
“We’re kind of — okay, they’re airing on the side of safety. So, I also understand it, so we’re not really too upset. But it is so frustrating trying to move around plans,” Julian Carrasco said.<\/p>\n
Airport officials said dense fog has affected operations since Thursday, leading to multiple delays and some cancellations. A total of 14 flights were canceled Friday, including both departures and arrivals.<\/p>\n
“We are advising passengers that are flying this weekend to please check their airline regarding their flight status before leaving their homes. They can also sign up for their airlines’ mobile apps, which their airlines will push out updates regarding their flight status,” said Vikkie Calderon with FYI Public Relations.<\/p>\n
Although she wished she had received notice sooner, Mariana Carrasco said she understands the challenges airports face when dealing with weather-related disruptions.<\/p>\n
“It’s frustrating, but we understand. I guess if it was like, it was a mechanical issue then we get it. But, obviously we can’t change the weather, as much as we want to. So, understandable,” she said.<\/p>\n
Airport officials continue urging travelers to monitor flight information closely as weather conditions impact service throughout the region.<\/p>\n
