In a crowd filled with tie-dye and flowers, thousands gathered Saturday under the bright blue Bay Area sky clapping, playing tambourine and chanting \u201cyou know my love will not fade away\u201d to honor the late Grateful Dead guitarist and vocalist Bob Weir<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The memorial event, dubbed \u201cHomecoming,\u201d<\/a> brought together fans, friends, family members and dignitaries to honor the artist, and highlight his legacy as a musician who built community with his art and hoped to make the world a better place.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about love. \u2026 You could see people from all walks of life \u2013 a cowboy, a hippy and whatever \u2013 all getting along. \u2026 There\u2019s this sense of peace and tranquility and we need more of that,\u201d said Eric Hoffner of Los Gatos, 66, who said he had been following the band around the country since 1976. \u201cIt\u2019s not the end of an era, it\u2019s another step in the road.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weir, a founding member of the Grateful Dead and one of the defining figures of psychedelic rock and the jam-band movement, died on Jan. 10 of lung issues after battling cancer, according to a statement from his family. He was 78.<\/p>\n

Weir co-founded the Grateful Dead in 1965 in Palo Alto. Over the years, the band built the most famously devoted fanbase in rock history \u2013 known as the Deadheads \u2013 mainly through constant touring and a commitment to changing up the setlist on a nightly basis so that no two Dead shows were the same.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Deadheads came in from places such as Southern California and Eugene, Oregon, and beyond to attend.<\/p>\n

Magnolia Grieco, 37, drove more than 6 hours from Santa Monica to honor Weir.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this music has been a part of your life, I can\u2019t imagine how you couldn\u2019t be here,\u201d said Grieco.<\/p>\n

From her 84-year-old father to her 2-year-old nephew, Grieco said Grateful Dead\u2019s music had brought together her family and others in the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean Bob Weir united generations,\u201d said Greico, who has a Grateful Dead lightning bolt tattoo on her arm.<\/p>\n

Many echoed that sense of unity, saying that Weir\u2019s legacy and that of the band was to bring people together.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the music, the ethos of kindness,\u201d said Greg Hansen of San Rafael, who handed out roses to offer in honor of Weir\u2019s passing. He said he had been a fan since 1968 and first saw the group playing in small clubs rather than stadiums. \u201cThey gave their lives to making their fans\u2019 lives better. \u2026 This is a great way to send him off.\u201d<\/p>\n

At Saturday\u2019s service, groups of friends and collaborators shared messages in person and virtually \u2013 from Gyuto monks chanting in saffron robes to videos from Willie Nelson and speeches from Joan Baez and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie.<\/p>\n

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called Weir \u201ca force of nature\u201d and \u201cone of the great dreamers\u201d who was \u201crestless \u2026 curious and kind.\u201d She sniffled as she spoke of the artist who had such an impact on the Bay Area and worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe music will never stop, the love will not fade, and the light you brought into this world will continue to guide us like a familiar melody we carry with us wherever we go,\u201d said Pelosi.<\/p>\n

John Mayer, who had played with Weir for years as part of Dead and Company, described Weir as an invaluable mentor who took a chance to allow him to \u201cstudy under a master.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe gave me a musical community, he gave me this community,\u201d said Mayer, holding back tears. \u201cWe\u2019ve only begun to make sense of what\u2019s gone missing. \u2026 Thank you maestro, you\u2019ve changed my life and I will love you forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bandmate Mickey Hart offered a speech full of laughter in remembrance of \u201cthe band clown\u201d who was constantly breaking the rules and pushing boundaries. Hart said Weir enchanted him from the moment he first heard him play.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was singular. \u2026 he was not a copy of anyone before,\u201d said Hart.<\/p>\n

Hart \u2013 like many on the stage and in the crowd \u2013 spoke of Weir\u2019s vision of a musical legacy that could last 300 years, promising that the music and the community that had evolved around it would live on far beyond Weir\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had that kind of vision. He knew that the songs would have a life of their own, not because of us, but because of you,\u201d said Hart to the crowd.<\/p>\n

Weir\u2019s family \u2013 his wife, Natscha M\u00fcnter, and daughters, Chloe and Monet Weir \u2013 ended the program by speaking of his role not only as a father and a musician, but also as an activist who believed in the power of music to change and connect.<\/p>\n

Eldest daughter Monet Weir highlighted her father\u2019s role as an activist and an advocate for human rights, who, despite being a staunch Democrat, frequently referred to \u201cour friends the Repubs\u201d and hoped for unity.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven when people disagree, they should try to work together to build a better humanity,\u201d she said. \u201cMusic can bring us together in these divided times \u2013 keep listening to the music.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Saturday\u2019s memorial came to a close, the mix of family, friends and dignitaries joined with the thousands in attendance to sing \u201cRipple\u201d in homage to the late musician. While bubbles and smoke rose above the swaying crowd and many wiped away tears, the lyrics echoed out into the bright, warm afternoon: \u201cWould you hear my voice come through the music? Would you hold it near, as it were your own?\u201d<\/p>\n
