The Long Beach Symphony is set to deliver an unforgettable evening of music on January 31, 2026, at the renowned Terrace Theater. This concert, part of the Symphony’s Classical Series for the 2025-26 season, promises to take the audience on a breathtaking journey through two iconic classical works. With a perfect combination of virtuosity and emotional depth, the evening will showcase the talents of world-class musicians and the timeless beauty of Tchaikovsky and Strauss.

Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto: A Dazzling Showcase of Passion and Virtuosity

The concert will open with one of the most beloved pieces in the violin repertoire: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Known for its fiery technical brilliance and deeply expressive melodies, this concerto remains a masterpiece of the violin canon. Composed during a turbulent period in Tchaikovsky’s life, the work is both a personal reflection of the composer’s emotional turmoil and a powerful celebration of the violin’s expressive range.

This violin concerto is a true emotional rollercoaster, with soaring melodies, passionate solos, and complex orchestral sections. The piece begins with an exhilarating first movement, followed by a serene and lyrical second movement. The finale is a thrilling whirlwind of technical brilliance, filled with rapid passages and dramatic flourishes. Performing this iconic piece as the soloist will be the internationally acclaimed violinist Tai Murray, whose artistry and virtuosity will bring a new level of depth to the music. Murray’s impeccable technique and emotional interpretation promise to deliver a breathtaking rendition of Tchaikovsky’s monumental work.

Strauss’s Don Quixote: A Musical Adventure with a Legendary Knight

Following the Violin Concerto, the audience will be transported into the whimsical world of Don Quixote, a tone poem by Richard Strauss. Inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel, the piece brings the legendary knight to life through vivid orchestral storytelling. Strauss masterfully uses the orchestra to evoke the fantastical adventures of Don Quixote, from the clashing windmills to the soaring escapades of the knight and his loyal squire, Sancho Panza.

Strauss’s use of the cello and viola to represent the two main characters is a standout feature. Principal musicians Cécilia Tsan (cello) and Andrew Duckles (viola) will take on the roles of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, respectively. Their performances promise to bring these beloved characters to life, adding a layer of dramatic storytelling that perfectly complements the symphonic textures of the piece.

Strauss’s Don Quixote is not just a musical experience, but an adventure that engages the imagination and transports listeners into the heart of Cervantes’ classic tale.
