{"id":143614,"date":"2026-01-21T21:14:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T21:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/143614\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T21:14:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T21:14:11","slug":"olympic-star-and-sf-native-eileen-gu-to-lead-chinese-new-year-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/143614\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic star and SF native Eileen Gu to lead Chinese New Year Parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Olympic gold medalist Ailing \u201cEileen\u201d Gu has been named grand marshal of the 2026 San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The March 7 event is organized by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cWe are very lucky to have Eileen Gu joining us,\u201d parade director Tony Lau said. \u201cShe\u2019s not only a big star but also has strong Bay Area community ties, and she has attended the parade before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cWhen I\u2019m in the U.S., I\u2019m American, but when I\u2019m in China, I\u2019m Chinese,\u201d Gu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/07\/sports\/olympics\/why-is-us-born-eileen-gu-skiing-for-china.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">said in a 2022 New York Times article (opens in new tab)<\/a> ahead of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, where she won two gold medals and one silver medal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cI do corks in an icy, 22-foot, U-shaped snow structure,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s not political. She did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">In recent years, organizers have chosen Hollywood celebrities, including actors <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2024\/02\/24\/chinese-new-year-parade-san-francisco-awkwafina\/\" data-post-id=\"e64a8261-a694-4cb1-8307-b4ad038e5916\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Awkwafina<\/a>, Daniel Wu, and Joan Chen, to lead the parade. Chinatown community leader and former parade director Harlan Wong will serve as honorary marshal this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Lunar New Year\u2019s Day falls on Feb. 17. The organizers will preview floats, entertainment, and a full slate of Lunar New Year events spanning more than a month.
