{"id":143677,"date":"2026-01-21T22:01:29","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T22:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/143677\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T22:01:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T22:01:29","slug":"heres-why-fog-in-fresno-central-valley-has-been-more-dense-persistent-than-usual","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/143677\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s why fog in Fresno, Central Valley has been more dense, persistent than usual"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/weather-news\/article314195819.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:wintertime fog in the Central Valley;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">wintertime fog in the Central Valley<\/a> has been especially dense this year, creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/local\/article314349546.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:major hazard;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">major hazard<\/a> for roadway travelers and resulting in Clovis Unified\u2019s first foggy day bus schedule in more than two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">What\u2019s causing the extra persistent haze?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Foggy conditions have lingered longer throughout the day because of extra moisture left behind from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/weather-news\/article313929333.html?link_source=ta_first_comment&amp;taid=694c000a4f6a1300011737bb&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:prior storm systems;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">prior storm systems<\/a>, said Brian Ochs, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service\u2019s Hanford office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ochs said an inversion layer situated above the Valley is keeping the weather stable \u2014 allowing the foggy weather to thrive without wind or rain to break it up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While temperatures typically decrease with elevation, an inversion layer will result in temperatures getting warmer until about 4,000 feet, Ochs said. This stable, high-pressure system both traps the moisture and keeps weather disturbances at bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Valley can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/weather-news\/article314351643.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:expect the fog to linger;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">expect the fog to linger<\/a> until at least the end of this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">With the hazy conditions, roadway travel has been particularly hazardous. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/local\/article314282477.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:17-vehicle pileup;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">17-vehicle pileup<\/a> on Highway 99 in Fresno resulted in one fatality last weekend.
